Human sacrifice is the ritualistic killing of one or more people with the intention of pleasing or appeasing deities, a human ruler, the public or governmental demands for justice through the death penalty, a religious or authoritative figure, the spirits of deceased ancestors, or as a retainer sacrifice, in which the servants of a monarch are killed so they can continue to serve their master in the afterlife. From prehistoric times onward, many human communities engaged in the practice of human sacrifice. By the Iron Age human sacrifice was becoming less widespread in Africa, Europe, and Asia, and during classical antiquity it was viewed savage due to the accompanying religious advances known as the Axial Age. Nonetheless, until European colonisation of the Americas, various people in the region continued to perform human sacrifice to varied degrees. Human sacrifice has become incredibly rare in modern times.
Case study: In the tribal area of , Chhattisgarh, a "mentally ill" man is accused of killing his four-year-old kid by slicing his neck in a case of human sacrifice, authorities said on Monday.
The authorities were notified by the man's relatives that he had reported hearing voices instructing him to "sacrifice" someone and experiencing hallucinations.The accused, named as 26-year-old Kamlesh Nagesia, was taken into custody after the event, which happened on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday in Mahuadih village under the jurisdiction of Shankargarh police station, according to a police official here
His wife went outdoors to inquire for their son when she awoke and could not find the toddler. According to the official, the accused told her that he killed his child in order to "offer sacrifice".
"The accused is said to be of unsound mind and he had earlier told his wife and other family members that he was having hallucinations and hearing voices asking him to sacrifice someone," according to the official.
