Child dies by homicide

The death of a child of any age can be devastating
Issues: The child's body can be missing or not visible, in which case a proper burial or cremation cannot be carried out Destinations by the police might take weeks, months, or even years. Authorities might start by searching the family for suspects, which would revictimize the survivors who are experiencing the most severe suffering. Updates on recent events could seep into the family, and weeks or months might go by without communication until the family initiates it. If the kid was killed abroad, the family might have to deal with the legal and law enforcement systems of that other nation, which might have different protocols. There might also be communication and linguistic hurdles and expensive and annoying travel.

It's possible that the family members can experience nightmares. It's common to experience shock, disbelief, numbness, uncertainty, rage, denial, and a sense that the world has stopped when you receive a death announcement. Murder is an affront to justice and equity in this world. Reactions over time may include anger, a need for retribution, anxiety, despair, hopelessness, sadness, and/or difficulty eating or sleeping. Frustration, self-blame (for not being able to protect the child), survivors' remorse, and worry that the killer may return are possible further reactions. It is necessary to address all of these typical feelings during the grieving process. According to research, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is common in survivors and may even blend into their new normal.

how to survive: Every family member responds differently to the murder of a child. While some may make an effort to live "normally," others may choose not to, realizing that "normal" is a transient state. Regrettably, the difficult process of mourning is frequently postponed as the family deals with the difficulties the child's death presents. There might be a lot of flashpoints during and after the pursuit of justice that will remind people of the horrific events that occurred. Among the triggers is observing or recognizing the defendant.

How can other caring friends help
Speaking with other parents who have gone through a similar situation can be consoling for many mourning parents. As a peer-to-peer support group, The Compassionate Friends can meet that need by providing grieving families who have lost a child with friendship, understanding, and hope. Sharing your story and where you are in your grieving process allows you to get insight from other people's experiences and coping strategies that have helped them get by. Even while not every member of The Compassionate Friends has experienced the death of a child through murder, they are all acutely aware of the anguish that comes with losing a child and are looking to learn from those who can assist them in finding purpose in their life again.
